Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior official commented the vandalism rendered him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
