EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
