A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
